JazzclubIt doesn’t get a lot of press around town, but The Commission Project is putting on some great jazz in the first week of June.  The Commission Project is a nonprofit organization that fosters creativity through music education by commissioning original music and producing workshops and composer-in-residence programs in public schools nationwide.  Every year in the first week of June, TCP puts on Swing N’ Jazz, which combines music education with golf and some great jazz sounds. This year’s events during Swing N’ Jazz include:

  • FRIDAY, JUNE 1 (7:30 PM)—Bassists’ Night Out, Shadow Pines with Jay Leonhart, Aleck Brinkman, Jeff Campbell, Caroline Kirby, Elliott Kirby, Malcolm Kirby, Jr., Malcolm Kirby, Sr., Mike Richmond, bass; Steve Brown, guitar; Akira Tana, and; Rich Thompson, drums
  • SATURDAY, JUNE 2 (9-11AM)—Morning Workshops at locations around Rochester
  • SATURDAY, JUNE 2 (7:30 PM)—Gala Concert at Hochstein Performance Hall with Paquito D’Rivera, saxophone/clarinet; Carl Atkins, saxophone; Paul Smoker, trumpet; Marvin Stamm, music director and trumpet; Mark Kellogg, trombone; Fred Wesley, trombone; Bill Cunliffe, piano; Steve Brown, guitar; Jay Leonhart, bass; Mike Richmond, bass; Akira Tana, drums and; Rich Thompson, drums
  • SUNDAY, JUNE 3—Golf Tournament & Dinner, Jam Session, Greystone Golf Club (Jam Session will include many of those from the Saturday Night gala).

Rather than go into any more detail, I suggest you check their site out and the PDF of the flyer for the 2007 Swing N’ Jazz event.  One of my blog links (Rifftides) has some great things to say about this event from last year.
