About two years ago, Peruvian jazz man Gabriel Alegria  and his Afro-Peruvian Sextet brought his 4FutureMusic Tour to the University of Rochester to play for a large handful of hardy souls (it was a dark and stormy night . . . ). Although it is supposed to be cold outside on January 19th when he comes into town again to open up the 2008 season of the Exodus to Jazz series at VENU, it will be hot inside. As you can read here, I really enjoyed their set at UofR in 2006. Gabriel Alegria is one of the most influential figures on the jazz scene in Peru, creating music that combines the African roots found in American jazz with Afro-Peruvian music from his country’s Pacific coast. He has played with Maria Schneider, Placido Domingo, Ingrid Jensen, Tierney Sutton, Russell Ferrante, Bill Waltrous and Bobby Shew. During their ETJ set, the Sextet will feature music from their latest recording entitled “Nuevo Mundo”, which is scheduled for release in January 2008.  The Sextet’s current tour sponsors include the Asociación Internacional Jazz Perú (AIJP), the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) and the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.

Come out and see Gabriel Alegria on Saturday, January 19th at VENU Resto-Lounge and Niteclub on St. Paul St. downtown. There are two shows (7:00 PM and 9:00 PM). Tickets are $17.00 through TicketWeb.com (search “Gabriel Alegria” or “Exodus To Jazz”). Tickets purchased at the door, by calling 585-325-9162 or through an email to ExodusToJazz@aol.com are $ 20.00. Student tickets are $ 10.00 with a current ID.
