As I’ve mentioned in recent posts, the platform that JazzRochester has been published on since 2006, Typepad, announced at the end of August that I had just over 30 days to “get the hell outta here…!” I have obliged and moved the site to WordPress. We went live yesterday and while it was a lot of work, it was a pretty smooth transition! This post is to tell you a bit about the changes and help you navigate (and to test whether the connection to my email program works, etc.).
First, I think the look is cleaner and definitely more accessible. The site is responsive and will display the components of the front page on your mobile device, iPad or other tablet, and desktop, of course.
On the front page, the main change is that the current listings post will usually be displayed first (I still have to figure out what I’ll do when there is also a special post, like this one). I have archived all of the earlier listings posts (there are over 900 of them!) in the Listings Archive as I didn’t want to lose that “database” of who has played here over the years. When I publish the listings post, the prior week’s post will be moved to that archive. I have added a gallery of Featured Posts, such as our recent post about the album recently released by local jazz musician Jacobo Vega-Albela and posts from the RIJF this summer.
The listings usually look out about 2 months (that’s the “beyond”) and now rather than those long posts, only the coming weeks live jazz listings will be visible. Similar to how I had it on the prior platform. In this case there is a dropdown at the end that will open up the rest of the post.
The right panel has the same links and a widget with the most recent images from the JazzRochester Instagram account. The post archives are now in a dropdown after the Categories in the right panel. Finally, you can search the whole of JazzRochester in the footer.
The site is still “under construction” some and I expect there will be more changes as I discover cool things I can do with it and WordPress. I hope you like the changes! Let me know what you think—good or bad (be kind…)—in comments to this post
