Ballot Box

On October 12th, I posted a poll to get a better idea of the kinds of content the readers of JazzRochester are most interested in seeing and the social media channels that you are (or wish to be) following JazzRochester on. The poll closed yesterday. About 350 of you responded (with half that responding about social media), and several of you left some very appreciated comments. Thanks to all who took the time! So, what did I learn?

Some of the results confirmed what I already knew about the audience of JazzRochester. Clearly, your main reason for following us are the weekly listings of live jazz around Rochester (I’m shocked…!). I think we have that covered although I’m always looking for ways to get more artists and venues to let me know when and where the live jazz can be found. I was pleased to find that there is significant interest in seeing more interviews or spotlight posts about local jazz musicians and venues. I hope to increase those types of posts in the future.

There was also some interest in more images and even video of local live jazz performances. I do share images from those gigs I go out to see on Instagram (and the most recent of those are shared on the site in the right panel) and occasionally video on Facebook. There are much better photographers than me out there snapping great images of ROC jazz gigs (yes, I’m looking at you, Aaron Winters!). Perhaps we can develop some pathways to share some of their images if they are willing. However, the JazzRochester YouTube channel is pretty pathetic. When I go out for some live jazz, I’m there to listen so videos won’t come from me, but I will have a think on how to get more video into JazzRochester.

There was some interest expressed in interesting links from around the jazz world. Years ago, I had a series of posts that I called “Take Five” posts, which included those types of links. While I occasionally share such links on the social channels, I might re-ignite that post series.

On the social channel question in the poll, the results again confirmed what I was thinking, but had some surprises. The overwhelming majority of readers who responded were on Facebook, which given the demographics of JazzRochester’s readers (a significant number of us are older farts like me…) is not that surprising. However, we’ve been growing on Instagram and it being the second most popular suggests I need to find additional ways to share on that platform. The surprise was that the third most popular choice was YouTube. Given what I wrote above about that channel, this result further underlined the need to address JazzRochester’s YouTube channel. Right behind that was Reddit, where I publish links to the listings posts to the r/Rochester and r/FingerLakes subreddits.

Thanks again to those who participated! Now that I’m past moving this site to a new platform, I hope to focus more on improving what goes into JazzRochester (and out to you).

In addition to the musicians who play it, live jazz depends on many people to thrive in a community.
